Wedding Announcement

Smith – Fletcher

CANNING, Oct. 8 –Friends received the announcement of the marriage which took place at Christ Church, Aldershot, England; August 28, of Miss Freda Joy Fletcher, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. B. Fletcher, 130 Grosvenor, Road, Aldershot, England, and Sgt, William Donald Fraser Smith, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. Donald Smith, now of Kentville, and formerly of Canning. The ceremony was performed by Rev. G. Gordon Keeling.

The bride wore an ankle length gown of white silk lace with lace’ veil, and was given in marriage by her father. Her only ornament was a gold cross and chain. The bridesmaid was Miss Joan Lingard, and the groomsman was Pte.. Linden Smith, a brother of the groom.

Following the wedding a reception was held at the home of the bride’s, parents, after which the young couple left for Teignmouth, Devon: where they spent their honeymoon;

They were the recipients of many lovely gifts, including a canteen of. cutlery from the staff of the Mid Southern Utility Co., where bride is employed.

SMITH, William D.F. -76, Halifax, passed away peacefully in the New Halifax Infirmary, QEII, on February 12,2000. Born in Canning, on May 29, 1923, he was the eldest son of the late Donald Fraser and Vera Monro (Hazel) Smith. He proudly served his country overseas as a member of the Canadian Armed Forces from 1941-1945. Upon returning home to Canada, he gained employment as a reporter for the Halifax Herald and held the post from 1945-1947 and from 1947-1952, he was employed as City Editor of the Saint John Telegraph Journal, N.B. He also held the post of Editor for both the Champlain and the River St. John, N.B. in 1952. He was Research, Assistant and Executive Aide to the Chairman of the Canadian Banking Commission from 1952- 1967 and Executive Secretary, Canadian Centennial Year, 1967. He served as Editor of the Halifax Herald Ltd. from 1970-1977, and later became Director of The Halifax Herald Ltd., he became Special Programs Coordinator for TUNS Halifax, in 1980, later joining the TUNS Board of Directors. He retired from TUNS in 1989. He also served as a member of the Board of Directors, Acadia University Institute and the Saint John College Development Corporation. He was a former Chairman of both UNB and the Unemployment Commission as well as having served on the Board of Directors of the Saint John Board of Trade, N.B. He was also a member of the Canadian Press, the Canadian Chamber of  Commerce, the Maritime Board of Trade, the RCAF Association and the Canadian Legion. He is survived by his wife, Maureen Clare (Hull), Halifax; sons, Jerome Francis (Lori MacCormick), Hubbards; Darren Cyril, Dartmouth; Andrew Lewin, Edmonton, Alta.; daughters-, Dawn Clare, Lafayette, Louisiana; Amber-Leigh, Dartmouth; brothers, Linden, Calgary, Alta.; Adrian, Vancouver, B.C.; granddaughter, Chelsea (Dawn, Sackville. He was predeceased by his brother, Jackie; sister, Patricia. He will be very  sadly missed. Private service to be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Cruikshank’s Halifax Funeral Home. Donations may be made to the QEII Health Sciences Centre.
