Obituary:

The funeral service of the late William Donald Fraser Smith, son of the late W. D. F. Smith. of Halifax, took place on Thursday afternoon from his late residence, Canning. A short service conducted by Rev. G. C. Brown was held at the house. ‘The body was taken to Christ Church, where the service was in charge of Rev. C. Brown, assisted by Rev. T. W. Hodgson. The speaker chose for his text: “He will swallow up death in victory, and God will wipe away tears from all faces”. The faithfulness of the deceased, was the Christ Church for 15 years, and the loss to the family and community were emphasized by the speaker. The Masons had charge of the service at the grave where Worshipful Master W.F. Porter,  was assisted by Rev. Thomas Hodgson. The Masons, the Oddfellows, and Foresters were represented in the cortege.

Obituary from another paper:

In the forty-fourth year of his age, was a Freemason and also an Oddfellow and had been Warden of Christ Church for about fifteen years. He conducted a plumbing business in this town and had been very successful in his calling.

There were left behind to mourn their loss, beside a widow and ten children, his mother, Mrs. Theresa Mitchell, one brother Percival and three sisters, Mrs. George Melvin, Mrs. Robt. Wallace and Mrs. William Jollimore, all of Halifax and a Sister, Mrs. Deliart, residing in Sydney.

The funeral will take place with Masonic honors at 1p.m. on Thursday at Christ Church were the rector, the Rev. G.C. Brown will officiate, and thence to St. Johns Cemetery, Church Street. The family will have the sincere sympathy of  a very wide circle of friends in their bereavement.

Mrs. Maude Smith,

Canning – Mrs. Maude Smith, Widow of W. D. F. Smith died at the Western Kings Memorial hospital, Berwick.

Born in Chester 76 years ago, she was the daughter of Robert and Marian Nauss Barkhouse. She attended school in Chester and in 1900 married Donald Smith in Halifax.

After their marriage they moved to Canning where Mr. Smith opened land operated a plumbing business. During her 1ifetime Mrs. Smith took an active part in church and community activities. She was a member of the Church of England, Canning.

Left to mourn her passing are two daughters; Theresa (Mrs. Herbert Erickson), Auburndale, Mass.; Marian (Mrs. Kenneth Keller) Manhatten, Winnipeg; eight sons: Donald, Halifax, Seldon, Toronto, Archie, Aylesford, John, Bridgewater, Robert, Lunenburg, Fred, Middleton, Edward, Ralph,: Epson, England.

One brother, Ralph Barkhouse, Chester, also 28 grand children,: and 18 great grandchildren. 

The remains which are resting at H. C. Lindsay funeral home, Kentville, will be taken to the Anglican ,church, Canning for funeral services on Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m. Archdeacon Bullock will officiate. Burial in St. John’s cemetery, Church street.
