Passed away at age 91, in Soldiers Memorial hospital, Middleton, on December 11, 2000. Beloved husband of the late Catherine (KayCurley) Smith, and son of the late William D. F. and Maude (Barkhouse) Smith (Canning). Dear father of son, Fred and wife Yolande in Bragg Creek, Alta.; daughter, gail and husband Fred Granville, Burlinton; son, Brian and wife Donna, Dartmouth. Lovingly remembered by grandchildren, Natalie and Mark Smith, Sean, Susan and Scot Granville, Daniel and Michael Smith. Survived by brothers Edward, Nictaux and John, Kentville; and predeceased by brothers Robert, Seldon, Peter, Ralph and Arch and sisters Marian and Theresa. 
Fred began working for T.P. Calkin hardware firm in Kentville in 1928, where he met a young teacher at Mack Business Collage, from Middleboro, Massachusetts, named Kay Curley. They married and moved to Middleton in 1933, where he served as manager of Middleton’s Hardware Store until his retirement in 1973. The community on Middleton was very important to Fred. He began serving as a town councillor in 1936, and was elected mayor from 1962 to 1968 and again from 1974 to 1976. He served as a long-time member of the local Fire Department and Rotary Club. He was active in St. Monica’s Catholic Church activities, particularly in the creation of the parish and during construction of the Church building. He was a board member of the Soldiers Memorial Hospital from 1951 too 1963, and was Chairman of Finance during the building of the present hospital. He was also Chairman of the local Housing Authority from 1968 to 1973, the period when the senior citizens and low rental housing projects were under construction. Early in his retirement, he worked as a bookkeeper for Brown and Murphy Limited, and as Chairman of Building Committee for the creation of the MacDonald Museum. He was also President of the Annapolis Valley Historical Society. In recent years, he was inducted into the Middleton Sports Hall of Fame as a member of the 1976 Provential Senior Men’s Curling Championship Team, and as a member of the 1935-1936 Middleton Maple Leafs senior hockey team. Fred will be missed by his family, friends and neighbours who filled his life. Visitation will take place at Warren T. Roopp Funeral Home, Main Street in Middleton, on Thursday, from 2-4, 7-9 p.m. A requiem service will be held in St. Monica’s Catholic Church, Connaught Avenue in Middleton on Friday, December 15 at 10 a.m., with Rev. Gerald Saulnier officiating. Burial will follow in Pine Grrove Cemetery, Middleton. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the charity of your choice would be appreciate
